Dear Secretary Burns:

I am writing as a US citizen concerned with the ongoing abuses of human rights and due process in Bangladesh. I have learned about the case of Dr. Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir, who is detained as a political prisoner for his pro-democracy role, and against whom the government has brought a series of charges, including treason, extortion, and corruption, only to keep him imprisoned. Dr. Alamgir is a US-educated economist who has a reputation of integrity, served as a major development planner, and actively promoted democracy since the late 1980s. His prosecution is proceeding with his fundamental legal and political rights suspended. I respectfully request you to bring up Dr. Alamgir's case with the Bangladeshi government, and urge the government to restore full legal and political rights, so that trials can be held with minimum internationally accepted standards.

Yours truly,
