Sample Message A

Your excellency,

I am deeply concerned about the continued detention of Dr. M. K. Alamgir, a prominent economist, and especially about the violations of due process in the case. Dr. Alamgir has been persecuted in this manner before. I have learned that he is currently being prosecuted based on inconsistencies in his statements that he was forced to make while in jail, under duress, and without access to his lawyers or his documents. Moreover, all his fundamental rights are suspended and the case is being pursued in special tribunals. This form of prosecution is in violation of international treaties that Bangladesh has signed, and that your government is committed to uphold.

I request you to release Dr. Alamgir. If you must try him, please restore the full fundamental legal rights of the accused before proceeding to court, such that any such trial conforms to internationally accepted legal standards.

I write to you out of concern for Dr. Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir. Dr. Alamgir has been persecuted for years because of his outspoken views. His current prosecution is being conducted with fundamental rights suspended, and with multiple restrictions on due process, including limited right to bail and appeal. This type of trial would violate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards of law and fair judicial process.  I therefore appeal to you to look into this case urgently, with a view to releasing Dr. Alamgir, and in the least, ensuring that due process and full legal rights are restored to ensure the integrity of trials.

Bangladesh has a reputation of being moderate, and is a party to several international agreements, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which commit the state to uphold basic standards of human rights and judicial fairness.

I would ask you to make inquiries to satisfy yourself personally that the conditions under which Dr. Alamgir is being prosecuted and kept imprisoned without bail are in keeping with the basic standards expected today by all members of the international community.

Your Excellency,

In my capacity as a university professor, I am writing to you about the detention and trial of Dr. Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir.

In view of the information available to me, Dr. Alamgir's trial is proceeding while many of his legal rights, including right to access information in a timely manner, right to bail, and right to appeal, are restricted or suspended. Over the course of the past three months, Dr. Alamgir has been deprived of his freedom and rights in violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards. May I take the liberty of drawing your attention to a specific detail: Dr. Alamgir is being tried for an inconsistency in his financial report that he had to submit while in jail and without access to his financial documents. This appears to be an unfair charge.

Motivated by respect for human rights and due process, I appeal to you to intervene in this case to withdraw these charges, and/or to grant Dr. Alamgir the right to a fair and open trial in a regular court of law with full fundamental rights restored.
